The process is underway to merge the Boiling Springs and Holly Springs precincts into a new precinct to be called Broad River Precinct, and to merge the Shelby 4 and Shelby 8 precincts into a new precinct which will have the Shelby 4 name to continue the Shelby precincts' numerical sequence. Since only seven Shelby precincts will remain, the Shelby 8 name will not be used.
The Cleveland County Board of Elections has approved the mergers after holding hearings, and the N. C. Board of Elections is expected to approve, as required before the changes take effect.
Assuming approval, the precinct changes will be in place for the 2014 primary election. The local Board of Elections will mail registered voters in the precincts information about their polling places.
The Cleveland County Democratic Party is considering how the mergers will affect party precinct organizations and their annual meetings to be held in March. The changes will be discussed at the CCDP Executive Committee meeting in January.
