CCDP plans lively annual county convention April 8

The Cleveland County Democratic Party (CCDP) will hold its annual county convention at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, in the auditorium of the Cleveland County Office Extension Building at 130 S. Post Rd. in Shelby.

Registration, refreshments, and fellowship start at 9:30 a.m., In addition to voting delegates from precincts, the party encourages other interested Democrats registered in the county to attend, learn about party activities, and join in festivities and meeting features including dialogue among those attending about the political path ahead.

There’s no charge for attending the convention, and no advance reservation is required. “It’s a great time both to renew old ties among us and make connections with newcomers interested in making a positive difference politically, including those newly registered,” said Joyce W. Sheaffer, CCDP chair.

Timing-wise, this year’s convention is also a good time to link in, she noted. It marks the next step in a new two-year election cycle culminating in the 2018 general election, with corresponding update of party structure and plans. Democratic precinct leaders were elected at grassroots annual meetings concluding earlier in March, and, during the business agenda at the convention, officers will be elected for new two-year terms and execution of new party plans.

To launch the fresh start, the Democratic gathering will forgo a typical guest speaker and gather ideas and inspiration instead from those attending, in table and general discussion.

Judging from larger-than-usual participation in recent party and precinct meetings, Chair Sheaffer said, it seems clear many local Democrats are newly invigorated to be more personally involved in grassroots political efforts. “We’re building on that momentum with the convention theme ‘Determind in Vision; Energized to Succeed,’” Chair Sheaffer said.

And the two-hour convention will feature the usual fun in addition to business such as considering resolutions and electing leaders and delegates to the Tenth Congressional District annual convention to be held May 20 in Shelby.

Music, door prizes, and a fast-moving auction will enliven the day. The auction, silent and live, will be sponsored this year by Democratic Women of Cleveland County to raise funds for its projects. Plants, baked goods, Easter items, and crafts will be among items up for bids.
